How to Create a Strategic Group

Strategic groups can be set to act as business workflows and/or functional groups. Follow the steps below to create a new strategic group device group in OmniCenter.

From the OmniCenter main menu, select Administration → Grouping → Strategic Groups to open the the Strategic Groups Administration page.

Click the Add a Strategic Group button to open the New Strategic Group page.

On the New Strategic Group page:

  1. In the NAME field, enter a unique name for your new strategic group.
  2. If the strategic group is to be used as a business workflow, you may wish to assign custom point scores for it. However, the following sub-steps are optional and can be left at the default settings, if desired. They have no effect for functional groups. See Strategic Groups for more information about the point values.
    1. In the DEFAULT HOST POINTS field7, enter the point value each host check contributes to the total group score (or leave the default setting).
    2. In the DEFAULT SERVICE POINTS field8, enter the point value each service check contributes to the total group score (or leave the default setting).
    3. In the DEFAULT THRESHOLD POINTS field9, enter the point value each threshold check contributes to the total group score (or leave the default setting).
    4. In the DEGRADED THRESHOLD field, enter the percentage of the group’s maximum point value or an absolute point value at which the group will be considered “degraded” (or leave the default setting).
      • This is a threshold value for the group score and is not related to threshold checks.
      • Depending on whether you entered a percentage or point value, select the appropriate unit value in the drop-down selector to the right of the value field.
    5. In the FAILURE THRESHOLD field, enter the percentage of the group’s maximum point or an absolute point value at which the group will be considered “failed” (or leave the default setting).
      • This is a threshold value for the group score and is not related to threshold checks.
      • Depending on whether you entered a percentage or point value, select the appropriate unit value in the drop-down selector to the right of the value field.
    6. Switch BUSINESS WORKFLOW to ON if this group is to be used as a business workflow. Otherwise, leave set to OFF.
    7. Switch FUNCTIONAL GROUP to ON if this group is to be used as a functional group. Otherwise, leave set to OFF.
  3. Click the Create Strategic Group button to create your new strategic group and be returned to the Strategic Groups Administration page.

A message will be displayed at the top of the page indicating that your new group was successfully created.

OPTIONAL: If you plan to use the group as a functional group and wish to assign a device template to it; click the edit icon in the Template column, select the desired device template in the pop-up dialog, and click Save. The settings from that device template will be applied to all devices in the group on the next discovery poll.

OPTIONAL: If you plan to use the group as a business workflow and wish to assign a custom dashboard to it; click the edit icon in the Custom Dashboard column, select the desired dashboard in the pop-up dialog, and click Save.

Your strategic group is now ready to have devices added to it. See How to Add a Device to a Strategic Group.

After you’ve added some devices to your strategic group, you can then choose to override the default point values specified above with custom values for any of the individual devices in the group. Use this feature if you have devices in a strategic group whose host, service and threshold checks should contribute more or less to the total group score than the other devices in that group.
